This week we will be finishing The Giver and writing more about our thoughts on how the story made us feel (did it end like we thought it would, differently from how we thought it would, etc.). We will also continue our studies in grammar and sentence structure to make us better writers (please do not throw anything away unless you verify that we won't be using it again). We will finish our parts of speech foldable this week and we will begin to use it to help us figure out how sentences are structured. If we have the time, we will get to watch more Schoolhouse Rock videos to reinforce the knowledge learned about parts of speech. We will continue our vocabulary packet (this week we will have covered a total of 20 words), and we will finish it next week with a final vocabulary assessment to follow. Here's to another productive and intellect opening week filled with fun in learning!
This week we will be reading more of The Giver and writing more about our thoughts on how the narrative is developing. We will also be starting our studies in grammar and sentence structure to make us better writers. We will start our study with the parts of the sentence and we will move on to the parts of speech. I have always loved the Schoolhouse Rock series of videos, so those will act as an intro to each day's activities when we work with grammar until we have all of the basics down, and then our work will become more intense. We will also begin our study of vocabulary this week. We will have a back of words, and we will do work with various methods in vocabulary assimilation, one of them being the use of Frayer models (you worked with these when you made a definition of your own names).

This week we will begin studying how different societies work through our reading of the novel The Giver. This novel presents one perspective on society through a dystopian lens (think about books like those in the Divergent and Maze Runner series). We will be reading this book primarily in class, but it will be posted on Edmodo and you will be able to follow along by reading the book on your own personal mobile device (tablet or a smartphone with pdf reading capability). Also, we will begin our study of vocabulary through unfamiliar words listed in the book. In order to expand your vocabulary and understanding of the book, you will begin keeping an interactive reading journal. This is where you will write down ideas you have, and words you don't know or with which you are unfamiliar. On Wednesday, we will administer an ELA pretest; this is simply so that we can see where your are now with your ELA skills. At the end of the semester, we will administer the same test so that we can see how far you have come during our time together. This test will be multiple choice with short constructed and extended writing responses (modeled after the GA Milestones exam). We look forward to an awesome week with you filled with new experiences and learning.
This week we will be working on a class Honor Code and a Mission Statement. We look forward to meeting all of you, and we look forward to all of the great things we will accomplish this year! We will be posting our assignments to Edmodo for much of the year, and that will be our primary form of communication with students over the course of the year. Go to Edmodo.com and enter the following codes to join based upon the daily class period.
